Biography

Louise Doogan is a textile artist based in Belfast and Enniskillen.  Louise successfully completed her Diploma in Foundation Studies: Art and Design at the University of Ulster, Belfast.  She chose to specialise in Textile Art for her degree and recently graduated with a BA (Hons.) in Fine and Applied Art (Second Class Honours, First Division).

Louise’s passion for art is obvious from her work.  Traditional patchwork techniques are juxtaposed with modern designs to represent refracted light.  Her inspiration for her pieces is derived from a number of sources.  The urban landscape and architecture, an interest taken from her travels to cities around the world including Barcelona, London, Athens, Paris and New York, acts as an influence.  For colour, Louise looks to artists such as Mark Rothko and Josef Albers; for construction and technique, Japanese origami has a special influence, along with the sculptural work of Sally Freshwater and Francois Morellet.

The level of care and attention given to each piece of fabric in every stage of producing work is extraordinary.  Materials are chosen carefully, and every scrap of coloured fabric is hand-dyed before being pieced together with precision.  Every part of the artistic process is done in a meticulous way to ensure the highest quality of work is produced and can be displayed with pride.  Through the combination of perfect stitching, delicate fabrics and striking hues, Louise constructs complex, intricate and eye-catching pieces.  Her work combines intense, shimmering colours with precise patterns to create optical-illusions, drawing in the viewer’s attention and making a strong impact.  Every piece adds an appealing, multi-dimensional quality to any space, and her latest collection is as versatile as it is beautiful.
